Unlock True Communication
Your step-by-step guide to getting an FCC GMRS License and taking your comms to the next level.
Why Get a GMRS License?
When you're off-grid, in an emergency, or coordinating with your group, standard walkie-talkies (FRS radios) just don't cut it. They're low-power and unreliable. A GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) license is your key to unlocking powerful, clear, and long-range communication.
- More Power, More Range: Transmit at up to 50 watts (compared to 2 watts for FRS), drastically increasing your reach.
- Use Repeaters: Access GMRS repeaters to communicate over mountains and across vast distances.
- One License for the Family: Your single GMRS license covers you and your immediate family for 10 years.
- No Test Required: Unlike a Ham license, getting your GMRS license is a simple administrative process with no test.
It's the professional-grade communication solution for anyone serious about preparedness, overlanding, and reliable group coordination.
How to Get Your GMRS License in 4 Simple Steps
Get an FRN Number
First, you need an FCC Registration Number (FRN). This is your unique identifier for all dealings with the FCC. If you don't have one, it's quick, easy, and free to get.
Register on FCC CORES Website →Complete the Application (Form 605)
Log in to the License Manager with your FRN and password. Start a new application and select "ZA - General Mobile Radio Service" from the dropdown menu. Fill out your personal information accurately. The form is straightforward and takes just a few minutes.
Pay the Application Fee
After submitting your application, you'll be prompted to pay the fee (currently $35). This is a one-time payment that covers you and your immediate family for a full 10-year term. It's one of the best investments you can make in your communication capabilities.
Receive Your Official Call Sign
That's it! The FCC typically processes applications within 24-48 business hours. Once approved, you will receive an email notification. You can then log back into the License Manager to download an official copy of your license and view your new call sign. Congratulations, you are now a licensed GMRS operator!
Gear Up for Superior Performance
A license is your ticket to high-power communication, but your gear determines your actual performance. The single most important component for achieving maximum range is your antenna.
The Maximus Antenna
Don't bottleneck your powerful new radio with inferior antennas. Our American-made Maximus Antenna is engineered for maximum performance and durability, ensuring your signal gets out loud and clear when it matters most.

Do I really need a license to use a GMRS radio?
Yes. To legally transmit on GMRS frequencies, you are required by the FCC to have a valid license. This license also grants you access to the higher power limits and repeater channels that make GMRS so effective.
How is GMRS different from Ham radio?
GMRS is simpler. It has channelized frequencies and requires no test. Ham radio (Amateur Radio Service) covers a much wider range of frequencies and modes of operation, but requires passing a technical exam to get licensed.
