Maximus Antenna Instruction Manual

1. Introduction

Welcome to the Maximus Antenna, the last handheld antenna you might ever need. This antenna is handcrafted from nearly indestructible Nickel Titanium to provide crystal-clear dual-band communication, even in the harshest conditions. It's designed for the hunter, hiker, or outdoorsman who demands a significant, reliable performance boost in any off-grid scenario. The Maximus is built to withstand the harsh conditions of the backcountry; it can be bent, twisted, and abused and will still be ready when you need it.

2. Specifications

  • Bands: 2m (144-148 MHz) & 70cm (420-450 MHz)
  • Material: Nickel Titanium (NiTi)
  • Length: Approximately 19.25 inches
  • Connector: BNC (SMA adapters available)
  • SWR: <1.25:1 (2m), <1.6:1 (70cm) typical
  • Power Rating: 50W
  • Radio Compatibility: Works with a wide range of popular handheld radios, including models from Baofeng, Retevis, Anyton, Yaesu, Quansheng, Wouxun, Btech, Tidradio, and more.

3. What's Included

  • Maximus Antenna
  • Silicone O-ring for weatherproofing the BNC connector
  • SMA/BNC adapter (if purchased separately)

4. Getting Started: Installation and Setup

  1. Prepare for Installation: If your radio uses an SMA connector, first attach the appropriate SMA to BNC adapter to your radio's antenna port. Illustration showing how to attach an SMA adapter to a radio.
  2. Inspect Connectors: Before attaching, carefully inspect the connectors on both your radio (or adapter) and the Maximus antenna. Ensure they are clean and free of any dirt or debris for a solid connection.
  3. Attach the Antenna: Align the slots on the Maximus antenna's BNC connector with the pins on the radio's connector. Gently push down and twist the antenna a quarter-turn (1/4) clockwise until it clicks securely into place. Illustration of the Maximus antenna correctly attached to a handheld radio.

5. Best Practices for Optimal Performance

  • Safety First: Never transmit (turn your radio on to talk) without a properly installed antenna. Doing so can damage your radio's internal components.
  • Secure Connection: Always ensure the antenna's BNC connector is fully locked into position before use. A loose connection will significantly degrade performance.
  • Maintain Vertical Orientation: For best results, keep the antenna as vertical as possible. A slight sag is normal, but avoid sharp bends during operation.
  • Get Elevated: Radio frequency (RF) signals are primarily line-of-sight. To maximize your range, get to the highest possible ground.
  • Proper Handling: Avoid holding the antenna while transmitting. Your body can interfere with the signal and affect performance.
  • Advanced Tip - The "Rattail": In difficult signal areas, you can improve performance by creating a dipole system. Attach a counterpoise wire (often called a "rattail"), approximately 19 inches long, to the metal base of the antenna connector. This can significantly enhance your signal. 6. Maintenance and Care

  • Clean After Use: Keep your antenna clean, especially the connector. Wipe away any dirt, dust, or moisture after use.
  • Avoid Contaminants: Keep the antenna free of oils, solvents, and other chemicals that could degrade the materials over time.
  • Heat Sensitivity: Do not leave the antenna in direct, intense heat for extended periods, such as on the dashboard of a vehicle in the sun. This can degrade the protective sheathing.
  • Dry Thoroughly: If the antenna gets wet, be sure to dry it completely, paying special attention to the connector, to prevent corrosion.

7. Troubleshooting

"I've installed my Maximus, but my signal doesn't seem to be any better. What should I check?"

This is a great question, and usually, the fix is simple. Let's run through a quick checklist:

  • Check the Connection: Is the BNC connector fully seated and locked? A loose connection is the #1 cause of poor performance.
  • Review Best Practices: Are you following the guidelines in Section 5?
  • Confirm Your Frequency: The Maximus is expertly tuned for the 2m (144-148 MHz) and 70cm (420-450 MHz) bands.
  • Test Against Your Old Antenna: Do a direct, back-to-back comparison with your stock antenna in the same location.

"The antenna (or my adapter) doesn't seem to fit my radio properly."

Fitment is key. Here’s how to solve common compatibility issues:

  • Identify Your Radio's Connector: Most handhelds use SMA-Male or SMA-Female connectors.
  • Ensure You Have the Correct Adapter: Match the adapter to your radio's needs.
  • Recessed Connectors: Some radios have a recessed antenna port and may need one of our "narrow/thin wall" adapters.
  • Still Unsure? Contact us. We're experts and can help you identify the exact setup you need.

(For Advanced Users) "My SWR reading is higher than the specs. Is something wrong?"

Here's what to consider if your SWR readings are high:

  • The Handheld Factor: SWR on a handheld radio is heavily influenced by its immediate environment, including your body.
  • Test in an Open Area: For the most accurate reading, test away from large metal objects.
  • The "Rattail" Counterpoise: Attaching a counterpoise can help stabilize and lower SWR readings.
  • Secure All Connections: Double-check that all adapters and connectors are hand-tight.

8. Warranty Information

The Maximus antenna is backed by a Lifetime Warranty against manufacturing defects. Each antenna is meticulously built in-house for peak performance. We are always improving our process, so your antenna might have slight variations or component updates from photos as we use the best available parts, but the core Maximus quality is always guaranteed.
