The Quartermain V2
At Iron Spear, we don't build shelf queens. Every piece of gear, from our Maximus Antennas to our field blades, is designed to solve a specific problem when you are miles from the nearest paved road.
The Quartermain V2 is no exception. It’s the result of relentless testing and a refusal to compromise on utility.
The History
The name Quartermain pays homage to Allan Quatermain, the lead character in H. Rider Haggard's 1885 series starting with King Solomon’s Mines. Quatermain was a legendary hunter in Africa, known for his keen abilities and unshakeable honor.
Designed and produced by master knife maker Jake Hoback, we worked together to bring a knife to market that offers the utmost in utility and ruggedness while remaining unique to the Iron Spear brand.
We have been developing this blade for three years, involving relentless testing and adjustments. We produced a short sprint run in 2022 and have further refined the blade since then based on user feedback. This blade has been tested in some of the most rugged terrain in the U.S., specifically Northern Idaho with its extreme winters and diverse hunting opportunities. Jake has been testing the blade on his family farm for three years, processing a great many sheep, chickens, and deer to prove the design.
Logical Order of Thought (L.O.T.)
We don't just grind steel and call it a knife. Every angle, choil, and material choice follows a Logical Order of Thought. Here is why the Quartermain exists in its current form:
1. Purpose-Built Utility
We believe a tool should be an extension of your will, ready at a moment's notice. The Quartermain is purpose-built to be a pocket fixed blade that you can carry every day for any need, but it excels specifically in hunting and combatives. It is designed to disappear until it's needed, and perform without fail when it is.
2. Blade Geometry
Geometry is hard to perfect for every task. From a hunting perspective, having a belly is crucial for processing game. For combatives, having a strong tip that is inline with the handle is vital. Typically, these two features don't go hand-in-hand.
The design we achieved offers the best of both worlds: a belly for skinning and gutting, while maintaining an inline tip for martial application.
3. Ergonomics & Grip
We don't take ergonomics lightly. As Jake says, "The only sharp part of a knife should be the edge." We ensured the handle was designed for all-day hard use while remaining secure when wet, slippery, or when the user is fatigued.
- Curved Puno: The handle is terminated with a "Curved Puno," a feature specifically shaped for leverage and fast, positive deployment from the sheath.
- Scallops: Provide amazing traction when wet or muddy.
- 3D Machined Texture: The G10 texture gives a comfortable, secure grip under normal conditions.
4. Steel Choice
Steel choice is subjective, and there are many "fad" steels out there with no real-world experience backing them. We went to the source and asked Jake Hoback, with his 25 years of blade-making, what steel he would trust his life to.
His answer: CPM-20CV. Currently, 20CV gives the least compromise for edge holding, toughness, stain resistance, and sharpenability.
5. Handle Material
G10 is one of the most durable knife materials in existence. It is amazingly lightweight and completely unable to absorb oils, grease, or blood.
