HT in the Truck: Mag Mount, NMO, or Relocation?
Share
You want the handheld in the truck — but the whip is still on the radio, poking the headliner or eating cup-holder space. This decision guide compares mag-mount, drill NMO, and relocation without scraping rival catalogs. Soft on “tactical.” Built for hard work.
Three ways to get the HT “into the vehicle”
| Path | What it is | Best when | Watch-outs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mag-mount | Temporary magnet base + coax to the HT (or mobile) | Rentals, borrowed trucks, try-before-drill | Paint care, ground-plane quality, wind / brush, coax mess |
| NMO (drill or existing hole) | Permanent vehicle mount + proper ground plane | Your truck, daily mobile, trail miles | Install care; always verify SWR on your roof |
| Relocation kit | Keep the HT; move the whip to pack / shoulder / vehicle shoulder | You still want handheld carry flexibility | Cable routing; still need correct adapters |
Mag-mount — honest tradeoffs
Mag mounts are popular because they feel reversible. They can work for temporary mobile use. They are also easy to oversell. Real limits:
- Ground-plane coupling depends on roof shape, paint, and how centered the magnet sits.
- Brush, car washes, and highway wind can walk a light mount.
- Coax and connectors still have to fit your HT gender — the mount does not erase SMA/BNC homework.
If you are still shopping “Baofeng magnetic mount” style intent, treat mag-mount as a temporary path — then decide whether you want a real NMO install or a relocation cable for pack carry.
NMO — when you are ready for Maximus Mobile
Maximus Mobile is Iron Spear’s NMO dual-band 2m/70cm vehicle whip: heavy-duty 3mm NiTi, handmade in Idaho. Mag mount sold separately. It is not an HT BNC whip — handheld BNC stays on Maximus / Guardian / Minimus.
Maximus Mobile — NMO dual-band
Everyday NiTi spring-back for trail strikes — Built for hard work. Pre-tuned for dual-band on a typical center-roof ground plane; always verify SWR on your install. See also the offroad / overland NMO guide.

If the radio stays on your belt or dash but the whip needs to ride higher (pack, shoulder, headrest area), use a relocation cable instead of forcing a roof antenna before you are ready.
Deep dive: antenna relocation kit for handheld radios. Still match SMA→BNC with the adapter guide.
Quick decision tree
- Temporary / try it: mag-mount path — accept the tradeoffs; verify SWR.
- This is your truck: NMO → Maximus Mobile.
- Still primarily handheld carry: Relocation Kit + HT whip (Maximus for dual-band amateur).
FAQ
Can I put Maximus Mobile on an HT jack?
No. Maximus Mobile is NMO vehicle. Handheld BNC options are Maximus, Guardian (155/465), and Minimus.
Does a mag mount replace a drilled NMO?
Not as a permanent equal. Mag mounts are convenient; NMO with a proper ground plane is the durable vehicle path for many daily drivers.
What about cup-holder HT with the stock whip?
Fine for short trips. For trail miles, relocation or a vehicle NMO usually beats a long whip jammed against trim.
Next step: Maximus Mobile when you are ready for NMO, or a Relocation Kit when the HT still leaves the truck with you. Built for hard work.
